Phoebe zhennan Seeds | Zhennan

LATIN NAME: Phoebe zhennan
COMMON NAME: Zhennan
Plant Profile
Phoebe zhennan, better known as Zhennan, is an evergreen tree in the laurel family. Over seasons it steadily builds a rounded crown, standing 5-10 metres at maturity. Full sun is ideal, in deep, fertile ground. Its appeal to pollinating insects adds a second, ecological layer to its ornamental one. It is hard to name another plant that gives this much for this little trouble.
Science & Biotechnology
Phoebe zhennan sits in the laurel family, a group that keeps botanists, horticulturists and plant breeders busy with questions of classification, adaptation and ornamental potential. As a protected and threatened species, it is also subject of conservation research, with studies of its regeneration, its habitat and its protection in the wild. Contemporary seed practice means a grower can raise it confidently with standard techniques.
Uses & Benefits
In the garden, Zhennan earns its place in borders, containers and mixed plantings, and it also rewards growers who raise plants for cutting, drying or kitchen use. Ecologically, zhennan is a noble tree of the Chinese forest. Its dense evergreen canopy gives shade and shelter for wildlife, its fruits feed birds, and it is a cornerstone of moist mountain forests where it grows. Today it is protected, and its sustainable cultivation is being studied to secure its future. Given the right start, it carries on with minimal intervention.
Phoebe gives the legendary golden-thread nanmu, the imperial timber of Chinese palaces, fragrant, stable and shimmering; the trees are long-lived treasures of Asian forests.
Growing from Seed
Sow fresh seed of Zhennan under ordinary good conditions. Growing a zhennan from seed is a patient, rewarding project. Seeds sit inside small, dark fruits, and they are best sown fresh, as soon as fruit ripens, since they lose vigour quickly. Sow the seeds evenly over the surface and cover lightly in a loose, well-drained seed compost, keep the sowing evenly moist, and give the pot or tray full sun. Prick the seedlings out once they are large enough to handle, grow them on in bright light, and plant out when conditions allow.
Our Take
Zhennan has real presence in the garden without demanding much in return. The essentials are simple: full sun, drainage and patience while it establishes.
