Corn Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is a slender annual of the poppy family (Papaveraceae), native to Europe, North Africa and temperate Asia, where it was once a classic weed of arable fields. It grows 30-90 cm tall, with bristly, divided leaves and silky, scarlet, paper-thin petals surrounding a dark centre in summer. It is the remembrance poppy of the First World War and remains one of the most beloved of wildflowers.

Growing from Seed

Avoid deep covering and provide bright light. Level a tray of loose seed compost, sow evenly, cover to about the seed’s own depth, and keep it moist in full light. Shift the seedlings into small pots as soon as they can be handled, and give them bright light until planting-out time.
