THYMUS serpyllum seed
Thymus serpyllum, wild thyme, creates low‑growing aromatic ground cover perfect for rock gardens, pathway edges and dry sunny borders. Its tiny fragrant leaves carry well‑known herbal qualities, and masses of small pink‑purple blossoms feed bees and beneficial pollinators through summer. Starting from seed yields dense, mat‑forming plants that adjust naturally to local outdoor conditions, building tough fibrous root systems ideal for thin, well‑drained soils.
Sow wild thyme seeds in shallow trays filled with grit‑enriched seed compost. Since these small seeds benefit from light exposure for strong activation, scatter them across the medium surface and press lightly, applying only an extremely thin dusting of fine grit. Maintain mild steady moisture and place trays under bright indirect sunlight. Sound seeds awaken readily, sending up countless tiny rounded green seedling leaves across the tray surface.
Seedlings grow slowly at first, gradually knitting together into compact little clumps. Once several true leaf pairs appear, they can be carefully separated and transplanted. Site them where sunshine is abundant and drainage stays sharp. Over time these seed‑derived plants spread outward to form fragrant leafy carpets, filling sunny planting spots with scent and seasonal flower colour year after year.
Thymus serpyllum ‘Elfin’ thyme is a very cute miniature thyme that grows really low, hugging the ground with tiny aromatic grayish-green foliage. Gorgeous when in bloom with soft pink flowers in summer. It grows in full sun to partial shade. Likes well drained soils with moderate water in the summer. This resilient little plant forms a dense mat of FRAGRANT foliage that will tolerate foot traffic. Perfect for a groundcover that covers slopes or fill in around stepping stones.
