Painted Maple (Acer pictum) is a deciduous tree of the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), native to Japan, Korea and northeastern China. It reaches 10-15 m, with five- to seven-lobed leaves that turn rich yellow, orange and red in autumn, and yellow-green spring flower clusters. Several of its variegated and white-splashed forms are treasured in Japanese gardens.

Thereafter it wants only the ordinary attentions any garden plant receives.
Maples give more than syrup and shade: the bark of several species appears in East Asian folk medicine for liver and eye comfort, and maple polyphenols, the glucitol-core gallotannins, are an active research area. Sugar maple’s mineral-rich sap remains one of the great wild tonics of the northern spring.
Growing from Seed
Painted Maple grows readily from seed. Bright light and steady, moderate moisture suit young plants well as they establish. Fill a pot with a light seed compost, sow evenly on the surface, cover thinly and stand it somewhere warm, bright and evenly moist. Prick the seedlings out once they are large enough to handle, grow them on in bright light, and plant out when conditions allow.
Our Take
Painted Maple settles in quickly once it finds its footing. Even moisture while the seed is chitting is the main thing; afterwards it largely looks after itself.
