The average height of an adult tree is 24-39 m (maximum-61 m). The thickness of the trunk 60-120 cm in diameter; trunk usually straight. Crown widely conical or rounded. The bark is yellow – or light brown, thick with deep irregular cracks, causing the bark has the form of scaly plates of irregular shape; with the smell of lemon and vanilla during the growing season. Large branches are directed upward with expansion; branches are strong (up to 2 cm thick), violet-brown, often grayish-blue, coarser with age. Buds ovate, yellowish-or reddish-brown, 2-3 cm long, not resinous; at the edges of the scales visible fringe.
Needles are collected on 3 in a bunch, expanding, 12-22 cm long, 1.5-2 mm thick, remain on average 4-6 years (less often 2-7 years); slightly curved, gray – or yellow-green, on the sides of the needles are clearly visible white stomatal lines, the edges are finely toothed. At the ends of the needles pointed or strongly narrowed; wrapper 1.5-2.5 cm, has a permanent base. Male spikelets (cones) are pointed-cylindrical, 20-35 mm long, colouring can be yellow, yellow – or violet-brown.
