Prunus persica Seeds | Peach

Peach seeds (Prunus persica)

LATIN NAME: Prunus persica

COMMON NAME: Peach, Common Peach

Plant Profile

Prunus persica, commonly known as Peach, is a small, deciduous tree in the rose family (Rosaceae), native to warm regions of China. It is a species of flowering tree, native to warm regions of China, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years, while it has been introduced across world, and it is known as peach or common peach. In good conditions it grows to around Eight metres. It is hard to name another plant that gives this much for this little trouble.

Science & Biotechnology

Peach kernel (tao ren) is an official drug of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia for invigorating blood circulation, used in classical formulas for menstrual stasis and constipation — but it shares the family chemistry of amygdalin, the cyanogenic glycoside, and cases of cyanide poisoning from excessive kernel consumption are documented. Pharmacopoeial use involves processing that reduces the hazard, and self-treatment with raw kernels is firmly inadvisable. The tree itself needs no justification: blossom, fruit and two thousand years of Chinese poetry in one plant.

Prunus persica sits in the rose family, a group that keeps botanists, horticulturists and plant breeders busy with questions of classification, adaptation and ornamental potential. Peach has a real and distinguished place in research. Interest from collectors and breeders has never lapsed, and good seed continues to circulate.

Uses & Benefits

Peach brings genuine presence to the garden and earns its keep across the growing season. Peach is a small, deciduous tree of orchards and gardens, bearing pink, five-petalled flowers in early spring and soft, fuzzy, sweet fruits in the summer. Its early flowers feed bees and pollinating insects, and its spreading habit gives a fine presence in orchard and garden, while its sweet fruits are a favourite food of humans and the wildlife. To raise peach, sow seeds in pots of moist, open soil in a cool, bright place, keep them gently watered, and grow little trees on in the sun. Mature plants need little attention in a well-chosen position.

The rose family’s great fruit genus gives plums, cherries, peaches, apricots and almonds, all carotenoid- and polyphenol-rich; in Chinese medicine the kernels and fruits, from Xing Ren for coughs to Yu Li Ren for regularity, are classical herbs, always processed to manage their cyanogenic compounds.

Growing from Seed

Seed is the natural starting point for Peach, and the process is uncomplicated. Fill a pot with a light seed compost, sow evenly on the surface, cover thinly and stand it somewhere warm, bright and evenly moist. The seed responds well to a cool, moist stratification period, which helps it break dormancy evenly. Prick the seedlings out once they are large enough to handle, grow them on in bright light, and plant out when conditions allow.

Our Take

Peach, Common Peach has real presence in the garden without demanding much in return. A few weeks of cold, moist stratification before sowing mirrors its natural cycle.
