Safflower seed Carthamus tinctorius

Grey green lance shaped foliage is produced on stems,
 bearing cups of stiff green bracts from which unusual
yellow to orange thistle like flowers are produced,
each around 4 or 5 cm in diameter.
Safflower oil lowers blood cholesterol levels and is
 used to treat heart diseases. The flowers have also
been the source of yellow and red dyes.
