Cervus nippon | Velvet Antler

LATIN NAME: Cervus nippon
COMMON NAME: Velvet Antler (Lu Rong)
Species Profile
The sika deer, Cervus nippon, is an elegant spotted deer native to East Asia. Every spring the stags grow a new set of antlers covered in soft, blood-rich skin, and it is this young, living antler, known as velvet antler or Lu Rong, that has been treasured in Chinese tonic culture for centuries.
Unlike the hard, polished antler of winter, velvet antler is a fast-growing tissue rich in blood vessels, and it is collected from farmed deer under veterinary care before it calcifies.
Science & Biotechnology
Velvet antler is one of the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom, and scientists study it as a natural model of regeneration. Analysis shows it contains collagen, calcium, amino acids, lipids and growth factors such as IGF-1, concentrated most heavily in the tip section.
Research into velvet antler extracts, mainly in animal and cell studies, has explored recovery from fatigue, bone and joint support and immune function. Grading science is well developed too: the upper wax slices are the most valued, followed by blood slices and the denser basal sections.
Uses & Benefits
In traditional practice, Lu Rong is considered a premium warming tonic, usually taken as thin slices simmered in soup, steeped in wine or ground into powder. It is one of the classic yang tonics and is typically used through the cooler months.
Modern users most often choose it as a general vitality and recovery tonic, and sliced grades make it easy to measure small, consistent amounts.
Source & Harvest
Our velvet antler comes from licensed deer farms, where trained veterinarians remove the antler humanely with pain relief during its natural growth window, a process comparable to shearing sheep since the antler regrows each year. The antler is then scalded, dried and sliced by grade.
Good slices are light in weight with a honeycomb core and a clean, faintly sweet smell; heavy, waterlogged or sour-smelling pieces indicate poor drying or storage.
Our Take
Velvet antler is the definition of a traditional premium tonic: expensive, carefully graded and best used in small, regular amounts. For most people the mid-grade blood slices offer the best balance of quality and price.
