Forsythia suspensa Seeds | Weeping Forsythia

LATIN NAME: Forsythia suspensa
COMMON NAME: Weeping Forsythia, Lian Qiao
Plant Profile
Known to gardeners as Weeping Forsythia, Forsythia suspensa is a deciduous shrub in the olive family, native to warm hills of China, while it is grown for its early golden bloom. Weeping forsythia is golden bell of early spring, and its bare branches of bright-yellow flowers are one of the first glories of the year. Established plants reach around Three metres. Few species give back so generously for so little effort.
Science & Biotechnology
The weeping forsythia’s fruit, lian qiao, is one of the standard ‘heat-clearing’ drugs of Chinese medicine, quality-controlled in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia through the lignan phillyrin (forsythin) and the phenylethanoid forsythoside A. Forsythoside A shows broad anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity in laboratory systems, and forsythia fruit is a core component of the Lianhua Qingwen formula that received wide clinical use and study in China during the COVID-19 period. The familiar garden shrub and the pharmacopoeial drug are the same plant, though drug-grade fruit comes from cultivated Chinese stands.
The species features in the wider study of the olive family, and its traits make it a useful subject for work on germination biology, cultivation and ornamental selection. Weeping forsythia has a real and distinguished place in the research. Nothing exotic is required: standard seed-sowing practice, done carefully, is enough.
Uses & Benefits
Weeping Forsythia brings genuine presence to the garden and earns its keep across the growing season. Ecologically, weeping forsythia is a generous shrub of the garden. Its many bright-yellow, four-petalled, bell-shaped flowers are an early source of nectar for bees and many insects of spring, and its fine, arching, leafy growth gives a fine cover and a shelter to the birds. Plant is best kept as a subject of study rather than a casual home remedy. Once it has settled, the workload drops to almost nothing.
Forsythia fruit, Lian Qiao, is a cornerstone Chinese herb for wind-heat colds, present in famous formulas such as Yin Qiao San; its lignans and phenylethanoid glycosides are studied for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity.
Growing from Seed
Raising Weeping Forsythia from seed is straightforward. Broadcast the seed thinly over a fine, free-draining compost, sieve a little more compost on top, and water with a fine rose. Shift the seedlings into small pots as soon as they can be handled, and give them bright light until planting-out time.
Our Take
Once established, Weeping Forsythia, Lian Qiao largely looks after itself. Give the seed freshness and steady moisture, and nature handles the rest.
