Pomelo seeds (Citrus maxima)

LATIN NAME: Citrus maxima

COMMON NAME: Pomelo

Plant Profile

Among the ornamental and useful plants raised from seed, Pomelo (Citrus maxima) stands out as an evergreen tree in the rue family. It grows steadily into broad, leafy form, and it stands warm, subtropical climate well. It likes sun, and deep, fertile, well-drained soil. Gardeners value it precisely for this blend of qualities.

Science & Biotechnology

The pomelo is the giant ancestor of the grapefruit, and it shares the family trait that matters most in the clinic: furanocoumarins such as bergamottin that irreversibly inhibit intestinal CYP3A4. This is the mechanism behind the grapefruit–drug interaction, which can multiply blood levels of statins, calcium-channel blockers and dozens of other drugs — pomelo and its juice can do the same, and case reports exist. The peel, rich in the flavanone naringin, is a traditional Chinese drug (hua ju hong) for coughs, and the fruit itself remains one of the finest of all citrus for the table.

Research touching on Citrus maxima ranges from the botany of the rue family to practical horticulture, including seed handling, propagation and the selection of superior forms. Largest fruits of citrus group give pomelo a recognised place in research on subtropical fruit trees of rue family, and maxima species appears in studies of citrus breeding and fruit acids and sugars. Its behaviour in gardens is well recorded, thanks to a long history in cultivation.

Uses & Benefits

Pomelo works well in borders, containers and dedicated beds. In warm garden, pomelo moons orchard with huge, golden fruits. Sweet segments serve tables of warm lands, thick rinds scent rooms, and tree makes fine orchard and specimen tree. It thrives in deep, fertile, well-drained ground. Once it has settled, the workload drops to almost nothing.

Citrus gives far more than vitamin C: peel flavonoids such as hesperidin and naringin are studied for vascular health, the dried peels, Chen Pi and Qing Pi, are major Chinese digestive herbs, and citrus pectin is a standard soluble fiber ingredient.

Growing from Seed

Raising Pomelo from seed is straightforward. Sow on the surface of a gritty, well-drained mix, cover lightly with fine compost, and maintain gentle, even moisture in a sunny position. When the young plants are big enough to handle, space them into pots or a nursery row and let them size up before their final move.

Our Take

It is a solid representative of the Citrus group, true to type from seed. Fresh seed sown into evenly moist compost is most of the battle won.
