Goji Berry seeds (Lycium barbarum)

LATIN NAME: Lycium barbarum

COMMON NAME: Goji Berry, Chinese Wolfberry, Gou Qi Zi

Plant Profile

Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum) is a sprawling, deciduous shrub in the nightshade family, native to warm regions of the east, while it has been cultivated for its berries for a very long time. Mature plants top out at about Three metres. Gardeners value it precisely for this blend of qualities.

Science & Biotechnology

Goji’s two signature constituents are the Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP), the quality marker of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and zeaxanthin dipalmitate — the berries are among the richest known sources of zeaxanthin, the carotenoid concentrated in the human macula. Small randomised trials report increased plasma zeaxanthin and antioxidant markers with goji consumption, and LBP fractions show immunomodulatory and neuroprotective effects in laboratory work; claims beyond that outrun the evidence. One firm caution: goji has documented interactions with warfarin, with several published cases of raised INR.

Lycium barbarum sits in the nightshade family, a group that keeps botanists, horticulturists and plant breeders busy with questions of classification, adaptation and ornamental potential. Goji berry has a real and distinguished place in research. With present-day seed handling, raising this species well within the reach of any careful grower.

Uses & Benefits

Goji Berry works well in borders, containers and dedicated beds. Ecologically, goji is a generous shrub of warm gardens and sunny slopes. Its small, purple flowers feed bees and insects of summer, and its bright, scarlet berries feed birds and small animals of autumn, while its arching, leafy growth gives a fine cover and a shelter to small creatures. To raise goji berry, sow seeds in pots of moist, open soil in a bright, sunny place, keep them gently watered, and grow little shrubs on in the sun. Routine care after establishment is refreshingly light.

Goji berry, Gou Qi Zi, is the world’s most famous functional fruit: a Chinese tonic for liver, kidneys and eyes whose zeaxanthin content is exceptional among foods and studied for macular health. The fresh leaves also make a traditional soup green.

Growing from Seed

Raising Goji Berry from seed is straightforward. Surface-sow onto a light, well-drained compost, dust over a thin covering, and keep evenly moist and sunny until the seedlings show. A cool, moist period before sowing helps the seeds wake evenly — a few weeks in damp medium in the refrigerator is the usual approach. Pot the young plants on as they grow, harden them off gradually, and plant them into their final positions when sturdy.

Our Take

Being a sprawling, deciduous shrub, it asks for a permanent spot and repays it yearly. A few weeks of cold, moist stratification before sowing mirrors its natural cycle.
