The Turkish pine is the tree of the eastern Mediterranean’s warm hillsides, and it covers vast stretches of Turkey and the surrounding lands with its open, airy forest. It grows into a fine, medium to tall evergreen, reaching twenty-five metres or more, with a rounded or umbrella-shaped crown of long, stiff, blue-green needles in pairs, and rough, grey-brown bark that becomes deeply fissured with age. It is a tough, fast-growing pine, at home on dry, rocky, sun-baked slopes where few other trees can thrive.

The Turkish pine belongs to the pine family, Pinaceae, and it is native to the eastern Mediterranean, from Turkey and Greece across to Cyprus, Syria and northern Iran. It is closely related to the Aleppo pine, and it thrives in warm, dry, sunny conditions, forming open forests on poor, rocky soils.
