White Ginseng Root seeds (Panax ginseng)

LATIN NAME: Panax ginseng

COMMON NAME: White Ginseng Root, Changbai Mountain Ginseng

Plant Profile

White Ginseng Root (Panax ginseng) is a low, perennial in the ivy family, native to wild harvest, and the whole, dried root is a treasured product of the changbai mountains. While it flowers, it feeds a quiet procession of bees and hoverflies. Plants that offer this much while asking this little are rare enough to treasure.

Science & Biotechnology

Few medicinal plants have been standardised as thoroughly as ginseng. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) sets quality limits based on the ginsenosides Rg1, Re and Rb1, and the ratio of these triterpene saponins also serves to distinguish Asian ginseng from American ginseng (P. quinquefolius), which is comparatively rich in Rb1 and low in Rf. Much of the modern human research has used the standardised extract G115; randomised trials with it have explored fatigue, cognition and immune endpoints, with generally modest and sometimes conflicting results, so the evidence is best described as promising rather than settled. Ginseng can potentiate anticoagulants such as warfarin and may lower blood glucose, so medicinal use alongside prescription drugs warrants professional advice.

The species features in the wider study of the ivy family, and its traits make it a useful subject for work on germination biology, cultivation and ornamental selection. White ginseng root has a real and distinguished place in research. Centuries of cultivation have left a detailed record of how it grows and behaves.

Uses & Benefits

White Ginseng Root works well in borders, containers and dedicated beds. Ginseng belongs to deep, cool shade of the northern woodland, where the slow growth and the steady moisture shape its long life. Its bright-red berries feed birds and small animals of woodland, while wild ginseng has become rare through over-harvest and loss of the habitat. To raise white ginseng, sow seeds in pots of leafy, rich compost in a cool, shaded place, keep them gently watered, and grow little plants on in the light. Routine care after establishment is refreshingly light.

Asian ginseng root is the most famous tonic on Earth, a classical qi tonic used for over two thousand years and now one of the most clinically studied herbs, with human trials on fatigue, cognition and blood sugar. Its ginsenosides, over a hundred identified, drive both the warming red ginseng and milder white ginseng traditions.

Growing from Seed

Raising White Ginseng Root from seed is straightforward. Scatter the seed evenly over a loose seed compost, cover to no more than its own depth, and keep the pot moist and bright. When the young plants are big enough to handle, space them into pots or a nursery row and let them size up before their final move.

Our Take

White Ginseng Root repays a little patience at sowing time with plenty of garden presence later.
