Solidago virgaurea, commonly known as European Goldenrod, is an upright perennial in the family Asteraceae, native to eurasia’s cold and temperate cold areas. European goldenrod is bright, upright perennial of dry meadows and waysides of old world, and a clump of it in flower is a fine, golden sight through late summer. Tall, straight stems carry narrow leaves and dense, arching plumes of small, yellow flower heads, and plant flowers for a long stretch into the autumn. It is a tough, easy grower of open, sunny ground, and it brings bees, butterflies and hoverflies with it. For the small amount of care it requires, the return is remarkable.

European goldenrod is one of the few ‘weed’ herbs with a formal European monograph: the EMA recognises goldenrod herb for increasing urine flow as supportive care in minor urinary complaints and for irrigation therapy to help prevent kidney gravel — uses backed by its flavonoids (quercetin glycosides), saponins and the diterpene leiocarposide, which shows documented anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity. The folk reputation as a wound herb (‘solidago’, to make whole) fits the same chemistry. Americans should note it spreads by seed, not by guilt — hay fever blames it unfairly for ragweed’s crimes.
