Species Profile
Sea dragons and pipefish belong to the family Syngnathidae, the same remarkable family as seahorses. These slender, armored fish drift through shallow coastal waters across the Indo-Pacific, and the dried whole fish, known in Chinese as Hai Long, has long been stocked by traditional herbal shops alongside seahorse.
Like their seahorse relatives, pipefish practice male pregnancy: the female deposits her eggs into a brood area on the male, who carries them until they hatch, one of the most unusual reproductive strategies among fish.
Science & Biotechnology
Syngnathid fish have attracted research interest for their peptide and steroid content, and laboratory studies, mostly preliminary, have examined dried pipefish extracts for anti-fatigue and hormone-related activity. Their unusual bony armor and camouflage also make them a favorite subject in marine evolutionary biology.
Because wild populations are pressured by both habitat loss and collection, captive breeding of pipefish is an active area of aquaculture research, though commercial-scale farming remains far less developed than for seahorses.

Dried sea dragon is graded by size, completeness and dryness. Good specimens are whole, straight and thoroughly dry with intact body rings and a clean marine smell, while broken, damp or fishy-odored material is lower grade.
