LATIN NAME: Rubus chingii

COMMON NAME: Raspberry, Ching’s Raspberry

Plant Profile

Raspberry (Rubus chingii) is a deciduous shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae), native to woodlands and hillsides of the east, while it has been cultivated for its fruits. At maturity it stands about Two metres. During flowering it gives bees and other insects a dependable food source. The ratio of effort to reward here is about as good as gardening gets.

Science & Biotechnology

Rubus chingii sits in the rose family, a group that keeps botanists, horticulturists and plant breeders busy with questions of classification, adaptation and ornamental potential. The Rubus chingii has a real and distinguished place in research. From a research perspective, species of this kind are valuable material for work on propagation and on the selection of uniform lines.

Uses & Benefits

Raspberry works well in borders, containers and dedicated beds. Raspberry is a prickly, deciduous shrub of woodland edges and garden, bearing sweet, red, aggregate fruits in early summer. Its flowers feed bees and insects of spring, and its dense, prickly growth gives a fine shelter to small creatures, while its arching canes help it to spread through woodland edge. To raise raspberry, sow seeds in pots of moist, open compost in a cool, shaded place, keep them gently watered, and grow little shrubs on in the light. Thereafter it wants only the ordinary attentions any garden plant receives.

Raspberries and blackberries are ellagitannin-rich functional fruits, red raspberry leaf tea is the famous pregnancy-preparation herb of Western herbalism, and the unripe berry, Fu Pen Zi, is a classical Chinese astringent tonic.

Growing from Seed

Seed is the natural starting point for Raspberry, and the process is uncomplicated. Scatter the seed evenly over a loose seed compost, cover to no more than its own depth, and keep the pot moist and bright. A spell of cool, moist conditions ahead of sowing brings the seed along nicely and supports even germination. Prick the seedlings out once they are large enough to handle, grow them on in bright light, and plant out when conditions allow.

Our Take

Reaching two metres, it needs room to show its full form. The seed responds well to a spell of cold stratification, a small step that pays off.
