Musk Thistle (Carduus nutans) is a statuesque biennial of the daisy family (Asteraceae), native to Europe and western Asia and now a widespread weed of pastures worldwide. It grows 50-180 cm tall, with deeply cut, spiny, silver-margined leaves and large, nodding, purple-red thistle heads that give off a faint musky scent. The nodding posture of the flowers is the source of its second name, nodding thistle.
