Ganoderma lucidum | Reishi Slices

LATIN NAME: Ganoderma lucidum
COMMON NAME: Reishi Slices (Whole Fruitbody)
Species Profile
This listing is for the complete dried fruitbody of Ganoderma lucidum, the celebrated Ling Zhi, presented whole or in thick slices exactly as it comes off the cultivation log. A well-grown reishi cap is a beautiful object in its own right, with concentric growth rings and a deep red lacquered sheen that made it a symbol of good fortune in Chinese art.
Whole fruitbodies let you see exactly what you are getting: cap structure, stem attachment and the pale pore surface underneath, all of which tell you about growing conditions and maturity.
Science & Biotechnology
A mature reishi fruitbody concentrates its best-known compounds, beta-glucan polysaccharides and bitter ganoderic acid triterpenes, in the cap. Research on these constituents spans immune function, antioxidant activity and more, though as with all traditional tonics the strongest evidence remains laboratory and animal work rather than large human trials.
The fruitbody, the cultured mycelium and the spore powder are three different products with different chemistry; whole fruitbody slices are the classic form and the one with the longest record of traditional use.
Uses & Benefits
Break or cut the fruitbody into pieces and simmer it for one to two hours for a full-strength decoction; the same pieces can usually be simmered a second time. The flavor is robustly bitter and woody, and many people blend it with jujubes, goji berries or liquorice to round it out.
Whole reishi is also displayed as a decorative symbol of longevity, which is why complete, symmetrical caps command premium prices as gifts.
Cultivation
Quality whole reishi is grown on hardwood logs or sawdust blocks inoculated with spawn and fruited in warm, shaded, high-humidity houses. The cap is harvested at full maturity, when spores begin to release and the white margin disappears, then dried slowly at low temperature to preserve the lacquered finish.
Well-grown fruitbodies are thick, heavy for their size and uniformly reddish-brown; thin, pale or greenish caps were picked too early or grown in poor conditions.
Our Take
If our sliced reishi is the everyday workhorse, these whole fruitbodies are the showpiece: same mushroom, full visual quality, ideal for gifting or for buyers who like to see and cut the material themselves.
