Species Profile
The Siberian musk deer, Moschus moschiferus, is a small, shy forest deer of northern and central Asia. The male produces musk in a small abdominal gland, and the dried secretion from this pod, known in Chinese as She Xiang, has been one of the most prized materials in the apothecary tradition for over two thousand years.
Musk deer are solitary and nocturnal, moving through mountain forests on delicate legs, and all musk deer species are now strictly protected under international trade rules because of historical over-hunting.

The characteristic scent and activity of natural musk come largely from muscone, a macrocyclic ketone that has been studied in pharmacological research for its effects on circulation and the nervous system. Modern laboratories can synthesize muscone and related macrocycles, and these synthetic versions now supply most of the perfumery industry.
Farm-based collection, where musk is gently taken from the gland of living male deer under veterinary supervision, has replaced hunting as the legal source in China. This approach, combined with DNA-based authentication testing, helps separate genuine farmed musk from illegal wild material.
Uses & Benefits
In traditional Chinese medicine, She Xiang is used in very small doses in famous classical formulas such as Angong Niuhuang Wan, where it is regarded as a powerful agent that opens the senses and revives consciousness. It is never used casually or in large amounts.
In perfumery, natural musk once served as the most valued fixative in the world, though ethical and legal pressure has shifted that role almost entirely to synthetic musks.

Legal musk today comes from licensed musk deer farms, where the grain-like secretion is collected from mature males once a year without harming the animal, then dried into the familiar brown granules. Buyers should expect documentation, since international trade in musk deer products is regulated under CITES.
High-quality musk grains are dark, oily and intensely aromatic; material that is pale, dusty or weak-smelling is usually diluted or counterfeit, which is unfortunately common in this market.
