Description: Rambling shrubs have medium green trifoliate leaves that turn beautiful shades of orange and red in the fall. Unlike its relatives, aromatic sumac is a totally non-poisonous plant. Tiny yellow flowers appear in clusters at the twig tips in early spring before the plants begin to leaf out. Separate male and female flowers can occur on the same plant or different plants. Female flowers give way to small clusters of brilliant red berries covered in a short pubescence which persist on branches into the winter months and provide a food source for wildlife.
Uses/Culture: Erosion control, informal hedges, naturalizes well, backdrop for other plantings. Makes an excellent privacy screen while providing protection for wildlife. Tolerates drought, dry and rocky soils, clay. Performs well in a variety of soil types and conditions when good drainage is provided.
