Shiny Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster lucidus) is a rounded, dense, deciduous shrub in the rose family. Shiny cotoneaster is a plant that works harder than it looks. It grows as a rounded, dense, deciduous shrub, usually about two metres tall, with sprays of small, glossy, dark green leaves that catch light and give plant its name. In early summer branches are dotted with small clusters of pinkish-white flowers, modest but busy with bees, and by autumn these become generous bunches of small, bright red berries that hang on into winter. Its open flowers are a reliable stop for bees and other pollinating visitors. It is hard to name another plant that gives this much for this little trouble.
