Agathis borneensis Seeds | Borneo Kauri

LATIN NAME: Agathis borneensis
COMMON NAME: Borneo Kauri, Damar Minyak
Plant Profile
Known to gardeners as Borneo Kauri, Agathis borneensis is a noteworthy species, native to logging tree outright. The flowering period doubles as a feeding season for bees and other pollinators. It is hard to name another plant that gives this much for this little trouble.
Science & Biotechnology
The species features in the wider study of the Agathis group, and its traits make it a useful subject for work on germination biology, cultivation and ornamental selection. As an emergent rainforest species reaching well above canopy, it also features in tropical forest structure and biodiversity research examining how such towering trees shape microclimate and habitat available to canopy-dwelling wildlife beneath them. Modern propagation practice has made this species straightforward to raise by ordinary good methods.
Uses & Benefits
In the garden, Borneo Kauri earns its place in borders, containers and mixed plantings, and it also rewards growers who raise plants for cutting, drying or kitchen use. Intact stands remain ecologically important as some of tallest living structures in Southeast Asian rainforest, supporting a rich community of canopy-dependent wildlife. Establishment is uncomplicated, and afterwards ordinary care suffices.
A tree like this repays patience for decades: it cools and shelters its surroundings, hosts birds and insects, and stores carbon in timber that outlives its planter.
Growing from Seed
Borneo Kauri grows readily from seed. Fresh seed germinates best, since like many rainforest conifers it does not store well once dried out; sow it promptly into a loose, free-draining mix and keep it warm and consistently humid. Bright, filtered light suits young seedling well, reflecting dappled conditions of a rainforest floor, and growth is naturally slow and steady in early years, typical of a tree built for centuries of life. Surface-sow onto a light, well-drained compost, dust over a thin covering, and keep evenly moist and sunny until the seedlings show. Pot the young plants on as they grow, harden them off gradually, and plant them into their final positions when sturdy.
Our Take
Native to logging tree outright, it is naturally at home where garden conditions resemble its wild habitat. It is generous with beginners and their occasional misjudgements.
