The Harpagophytum Procumbens is known as the “Devil’s Claw”. This name is not related to its action and properties, but to its crooked wrist that injures grazing animals in contact with it.

Is mainly found in the eastern and south eastern parts of Namibia, Southern Botswana, and the Kalahari region of the Northern Cape, South Africa.Useful part of the plant is its bulbous root.

The ethnobotanical use of devil’s claw originated in southern Africa.

Harpagophytum Procumbens is one of the floral emblems of Botswana where it is thought to be useful in treating a variety of pain conditions such as lower back pain, osteoarthritis and tendonitis.

Research conducted in Germany found that Devil’s Claw has strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Contains substances such as: Herpagosite, flavonoids, phenolic acids.

Its use should not exceed 4 weeks.People with gastric or duodenal ulcers should avoid it.

Making tea: Pour one teaspoon of the root in one cup of boiling water for 15-20 minutes, strain and drink up to 3 times a day.Suggested daily intake should not exceed 2 grams of root.
