Rhodiola rosea Seeds | Golden Root

LATIN NAME: Rhodiola rosea
COMMON NAME: Rhodiola, Golden Root
Plant Profile
Among the ornamental and useful plants raised from seed, Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) stands out as a low, perennial in the stonecrop family. The flowering period doubles as a feeding season for bees and other pollinators. It is the sort of plant that quietly justifies the space it occupies.
Science & Biotechnology
Quality rhodiola root is standardised to the phenylpropanoid rosavins (commonly at least 3 per cent) together with the phenylethanoid salidroside (at least 1 per cent), the roughly 3:1 ratio mirroring wild Siberian root. The European Medicines Agency has issued a traditional-use monograph for temporary symptoms of stress, such as fatigue and exhaustion, and randomised trials in stress-related fatigue and mild anxiety report benefits emerging after four to eight weeks rather than acutely. The evidence base is still small and mostly short-term. Because of theoretical monoamine-related activity, combining rhodiola with antidepressant medication should be discussed with a prescriber, and it is avoided in pregnancy.
Research touching on Rhodiola rosea ranges from the botany of the stonecrop family to practical horticulture, including seed handling, propagation and the selection of superior forms. Rhodiola has a real and distinguished place in research. With present-day seed handling, raising this species well within the reach of any careful grower.
Uses & Benefits
Beyond its ornamental appeal, Rhodiola has the practical versatility that makes a plant worth growing from seed year after year. Rhodiola is a low, perennial, succulent herb of arctic and mountain regions, bearing fleshy, bright-green leaves and clusters of small, yellow flowers in the summer. To raise rhodiola, sow seeds in pots of gritty, open soil in a cool, bright place, keep them gently watered, and grow little plants on in the cool. Establishment is uncomplicated, and afterwards ordinary care suffices.
Rhodiola root is the Arctic adaptogen: standardized rosavin-and-salidroside extracts have human-trial support for fatigue, stress resilience and mental performance, and it is among the best-selling evidence-backed tonic herbs in the world.
Growing from Seed
Sow fresh seed of Rhodiola under ordinary good conditions. Surface-sow onto a light, well-drained compost, dust over a thin covering, and keep evenly moist and sunny until the seedlings show. Shift the seedlings into small pots as soon as they can be handled, and give them bright light until planting-out time.
Our Take
Rhodiola repays a little patience at sowing time with plenty of garden presence later.
