Plant Profile
Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza) grows as a clump-forming perennial in the mint family, native to warm hills of China, while it is grown for its scarlet flowers. Red sage is a bright and handsome herb of warm hills, and its scarlet flowers and its long history in traditions of China have made it one of the most famous of the herbs of the region. The ratio of effort to reward here is about as good as gardening gets.
Science & Biotechnology
Danshen is one of the most intensively studied Chinese medicinal roots. Its chemistry divides neatly into water-soluble phenolic acids — of which salvianolic acid B is the most abundant — and lipophilic diterpenoid tanshinones, and both fractions serve as quality markers in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Salvianolic acids have been investigated in China in advanced clinical trials, including a phase III programme in diabetic peripheral neuropathy, while the compound danshen dripping pill has completed phase II studies in the United States for stable angina. Tanshinone IIA derivatives are likewise under investigation. Danshen is known to interact with warfarin, markedly raising INR in documented case reports, so combining the two is not advised.
Salvia miltiorrhiza sits in the mint family, a group that keeps botanists, horticulturists and plant breeders busy with questions of classification, adaptation and ornamental potential. Danshen is one of the most researched herbs in Chinese medicine. Because it has been grown for so long, its garden habits are thoroughly documented.
Uses & Benefits
Red Sage works well in borders, containers and dedicated beds. Ecologically, danshen is a valuable garden plant. Its blue-violet flowers feed bees and other pollinators through summer, and it thrives in sunny, dry, well-drained spots where many plants struggle, making it useful in drought-tolerant planting. Dried roots are a major commodity in traditional medicine, used in countless formulas for heart and circulatory health, and they support a large herbal industry in China and beyond. Routine care after establishment is refreshingly light.
Red sage root, Dan Shen, is one of the most important cardiovascular herbs of Chinese medicine, used for circulation and heart support in countless formulas; its tanshinones and salvianolic acid B are among the most researched compounds in herbal pharmacology.
Growing from Seed
Red Sage is one of those generous plants that come along well from seed. Growing danshen from seed is easy and rewarding. Sow the small seeds into warm, light conditions and keep them evenly moist. Sow the seeds evenly over the surface and cover lightly in a loose, well-drained seed compost, keep the sowing evenly moist, and give the pot or tray full sun. Move strong seedlings into individual pots, keep them in good light, and set them out when the weather and their size agree.
